Did you know?
The Czech Republic is the home of the finest Pilsner in the world and has one of the fastest growing economies in the European Union.
Nazdar! Belonging to the western group of Slavic languages, Czech has some 12 million speakers, two million of which are found outside the Czech Republic in countries such as Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Israel, Poland, Slovakia and the United States.
Czech has for centuries been the language of a stream of poetic and literary production. Said Czech writer Karel Capek, 'A thousand-year history flows through each word. We do something magnificently old and historic when we speak Czech.'
Many Czech-speaking people are to be found in Austria (particularly in Vienna), Poland, Germany, Ukraine (the Volhynian Czechs), Croatia (especially around Daruvar), and in western Romania (Banat). Several tens of thousands of Czechs live in Slovakia, where they have remained since the break-up of the Czechoslovak Republic (on January 1st, 1993).
Czech is also spoken outside of Europe – in Australia, Canada, and particularly in the United States, where the greatest number of Czechs reside outside of the Czech Republic. The largest communities are in New York City, Chicago and Cleveland, but they are also to be found in agricultural regions of Texas, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Nebraska. Altogether, more than ninety thousand Czechs live in the United States (according to the 1990 census).
